The Gransfors Bruks Hand Hatchet makes an excellent scouting and camping axe. Despite its short handle, the Hand Hatchet can be used to fell small trees, and is great for limbing and for splitting kindling and firewood.

Head Weight | 23 ounces |
Handle Length | 9.5 inches |
The distinguishing feature of the Gransfors Hand Hatchet is its short handle relative to the size of its head. It is extremely practical to carry in your rucksack on forest walks, or to keep in the car as it takes up very little space. The shape of the Hand Hatchet's sheath, which covers the edge and the top part of the poll, also stops the axe head cutting into your rucksack.
Chopping Dynamite!
This is not a small axe. It has a full-sized head (same as the GF Wildlife Hatchet) and a full thickness handle albet quite short.
This seemingly contradictory pair of features of large head and short handle makes a real powerhouse of a woodworking tool.
The razor edge of the bit can be used just like a knife with the handle barely in the way. But chopping is also a true use of this mini-beast with its 1.3lb weight and it will easily eat its way though logs up to six inches in diameter without breaking a sweat. Larger than that and you will want a longer handle.
This hand hatchet is a very capable compromise. There are small heads on full size handles, large heads on large handles, large heads on short handles, and small heads on small handles. Each combination has advantages and disadvantages. So where this little axe shines, it is brilliant. As you woodworking needs diversify, you won't regret adding this to your collection.
