We have had these axes in the past when we were able to buy government (forest service or military) contract overruns, and they were wildly popular. It has been more then a year since we have had any, but we still get inquiries about them, so Council tool agreed to run a batch of these for us. Since there were some complaints about the grade of handle on the Forest Service spec axes, we opted to upgrade to the handle from the Velvicut Bad Boys axe, making this one of the best axe options you can find.
We have divided the axes into groups based on appearance details. We think this is a win for every one. Those who want a certain look can get it; those who just want a great tool can save some money.
Please choose a sheath from the drop-down menu:
Price for standard sheath: $16.00
Price for Velvicut (full-cover) sheath: $25.00
We recommend using Axe Wax on your handle, which you can find here.
Pleased with FSS Boys Ax
Am pleased with the ax (paid extra for select). The edge needed a little touch up. The plastic wedge in this ax is spelled out in the Federal Supply Service specification for axes. Lines are straight and true. Having seen one for myself, I will get these U.S. made, FSS spec axes for my grandsons.
Cheap plastic wedge
I bought this axe a little over a year ago and well i must admit its a jice looking axw, handle is comfortable and the bit seams good the edge was crap. I know it was not sharp when i bougt it but the grind was rough and unevan. No problem fixed that up with some beers and sweat. My real problem came the very first time I actually put this into use. Granted I have several other much higher priced axes and have never had a problem ith them such as this. I limbed out a Eastern Red Cedar so not a hard wood. By the time I was done the Bit was hanging half way off the handle. The cheap plastic wedge was stuck firmly in the Eye. I treat all my handles with linsead oil to avoid loose heads etc. needless to say I removed it, soaked the handle i. Oil for 2 days and rehung it. We shall see how that works but next step will be to replace the wedge with wood. Not the end of the world but for an American made axe I was expecting more.
Forest Service Axe
Axe head and handle came apart on first day's use.

Worth the money?
I got my FSS axe and like the feel of the handle, the size and weight, and I'm sure the steel is good quality. However it is not hung straight on the handle as it curves off to one side looking straight down it. This doesn't affect chopping terribly so I will keep it, but disappointed that for what I paid the head isn't even straight in line.
If I paid an extra $10 for the hand picked ones, would it be better? Should I have to pay extra to get a tool that is correct?
If I could do it over again I would have gotten a Husqvarna
Well made axe
I got the 3/4 forest service axe in at the first of July. Good grain lines in haft. Glad to see haft not painted like Chinese crap at hardware stores. Head centered perfect. I cut wood daily with a chainsaw. I always limb with an axe. Now this is my goto axe. Good fast shipping an service A+
Disappointed
Being very pleased with my standard Council Tool Boy's Axe, I had high hopes for the Forest Service Axe. As this is a special run of axes carrying a higher price, I expected to see a corresponding step up in quality and workmanship over the standard Boy's Axe. Unfortunately, this was not the case. While the grain of the handle is quite nice and nearly ideal in orientation, the axe bit and the handle are poorly aligned. In addition, the paint appears to be carelessly applied, with a run down one side and an uncoated spot on the poll. Next time I will opt for the standard Boy's Axe at half the price with (in my experience) fewer defects.
wow
Handle is slim and comfortable, grain is perfect fit and finish is great the free sharpening is amazing, razor sharp.why would you pay hundreds for a foreign made axe
